In the early 1990s, an underground feminist punk movement emerged in the Pacific Northwest, started by groups of female students who were tired of the rampant sexism present in the hardcore music scene. By writing a manifesto calling for a “girl riot” against a society in which they felt marginalized, unappreciated, and without a voice, Riot Grrrl was born. As the movement grew into mainstream consciousness, it ultimately served as groundwork for the third and fourth waves of feminism. Many members under Riot Grrrl had lasting impacts on various forms of music, particularly paving the way for future artists to take up space in male-dominated industries. In this committee, delegates will work to combat intense media scrutiny, internal disorganization, and vicious clashes within the scene to ensure the longevity and legacy of Riot Grrrl as they see fit. This committee will place a large emphasis on delegate creativity and personal direction, where each delegate will be given their own chance to express how DIY ethics, radical liberation politics, and rebellion can be redefined on their terms.
About the Director
Hazel Parent (she/her) is a fourth-year English major minoring in Health Disparities in Society. Currently serving as UF Model UN’s Vice President and Director of Conference Logistics, she has been heavily involved with the team since her freshman year. She has previously directed at both SunMUN and GatorMUN (UF’s high school conference), served on the SunMUN III Secretariat, and competes in conferences as a seasoned crisis delegate. Outside of Model UN, she is working towards a career in professional communication and is currently writing an honors thesis on the cultural rhetoric of protest. In her free time, she can be found indulging in Instagram brain rot, listening to loud music, and going to local events with friends. She is super excited to be a part of SunMUN V and to see everyone in Orlando!
