The Unstoppable Tsunami: Mongol Invasion of Tsushima 1274
A Crisis Committee
About the Committee
Background Guide Coming Soon!
The Year is 1274: the sons of Genghis rule the world: China and Ukraine, Machuria and Anatolia, Persia and the Central Plains, but now Kublai Khan sets his sights on the Land of the Rising Sun. Before one may land on the beaches of Japan, however, the Mongol Empire must first force open the gateway to Japan: the Island of Tsushima.
In an effort to overthrow the Shogunate, the Mongol Empire mounted a naval invasion of the Island of Tsushima, a cosmopolitan island that served as the middle ground between Japan and the rest of Asia, which the Mongols hoped to convert to a staging ground for their war effort. Delegates must bring together the war-torn residents of the island, overcome both the real and metaphorical fog of war, and fight an enemy that has subdued every civilization known to your people. As tensions rise, you must decide whether it is better to fight and die with honor or stoop to the level of the invaders for a chance to win the war.
Despite the odds being stacked against them, the entire island must stand together to topple the invasion force and save the island. Join Samurai, merchants, and thieves alike in their valiant defense of their homeland against the largest empire to date.
About the Directors

Gonzalo Palenzuela is a third year civil engineering student at the University of Florida, entering his 6th year of competing in Model UN. His second year on UFMUN’s executive board, Gonzalo acts as the President of the organization, alongside directing committees at each of their conferences and frequently traveling. Outside of MUN, he trains Jiu-Jitsu with UF’s BJJ club, frequents local oceanfront properties, and wastes his time trying to lower his golf handicap in a near-Sisyphean effort. He is excited to bring his famous energy to this committee and have yet another wonderful SUNMUN!
Benjamin Hargrave (he/him) is a fourth-year Political Science Major and Arabic and Classical Studies Minor. This will be his 3rd year in Model UN, having enjoyed competing and staffing in the college circuit, and supports UF’s digital high school conference, SwampMUN, as the USG of Technology. Originally from Orlando, he enjoys visiting the local theme parks or hiking whenever he finds a free afternoon. Outside of MUN, he’s a voracious reader, semi-confident baker, and board game connoisseur. He is incredibly excited to work with you to implement this committee and dive into this unique historical period!
